Highlights:

  • Correspondents Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell get to sub host for Jon a lot while he goes and hosts the Grammy Awards (got a lukewarm reception) and the movies Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back and Death To Smoothcy. Vance DeGeneres and Mo Rocca try their hand and guest hosting too. They're never asked again. 

  • In April, The Daily Show got its own profile on CBS' 60 Minutes. 

  • Matt Walsh's first Daily Show appearance was in May of 2001

  • On May 17, 2001 Vance DeGeneres leaves The Daily Show to go back to California. 

  • In May, correspondents Steve Carell and Nancy Walls have their first child, a girl named Elizabeth Anne Carell. 

  • Also in May, The Daily Show earns a Peabody Award

  • The Daily Show celebrated their fifth anniversary in July. Having Senator Joe Liberman as a guest via satellite. It was to be their last anniversary show.

  • Lauren Weedman makes her first Daily Show appearance in July.

  • The Daily Show gets their first 2 Emmy nominations also in July.

  • September 20, 2001 : The Daily Show's first new episode since the September 11th attacks. 

  • November : The Daily Show wins their first emmy for writing. They are not there to accept their award. Wayne Brady accepts it for them.
